Agro-meteorological network was
started in Sri Lanka in 1973 with the guidance and
donations given by United Nations Development Programme(UNDP).
As a result of it, so many Agro-meteorological stations
were established island wide under certain institutions
such as coconut research, rubber research, agricultural
research, paddy research and tea research at the
beginning.
So
many meteorological instruments were donated under
the above programme. Later few stations were established
under Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority by the guidance
of dept. of Meteorology. We have been succeeded
up to Forty Agro-meteorological stations island
wide, collaboration with the above mentioned institutions.
Out
of these Forty, Six stations are handled by our
qualified officers.
We receive continuously data from all stations and
those data are quality controlled and processed
by the Agro-met Branch. Other than this, we supply
data for academic purposes, researched and other
relevant projects. The stations, not functioned
under the Met-department, are given required instruments,
relevant training and regular supervision with instructions.
